BEST OF BRITISH BY NORMAN FOSTER
ASTON MARTIN DB9 · PHOTOGRAPHY BY René Staud
The Gherkin, designed by architects Foster and Partners, is an environmentally sophisticated, 40 storeys, diagonal steel structure with spiralling lightwells at the heart of London‘s financial district.
Sir Norman Fosters London tower for the Swiss-Re insurance group and other business offices is an unconventional building. Declared to be too plumb by the British press, it is on the other hand very popular with London visitors.
Using a 41 floors and almost 200 meters tall construction, the British star architect has found a fascinating solution for the complicated demands of a rather tight building site in London‘s financial center. Standing on a circual ground plan, „London‘s biggest cigar“ looms conical into the sky. On the roof with the freely accessible visitors gallery one enjoys a breathtaking view onto the Thames and the skyline of London.
